Soil Health

A building is only as good as its foundation.  Your farm is the same.  The amount and quality of your crop is only as good as the soil it is grown in.  Whether your farm has been handed down through the generations or it's one of the largest investments you've ever made, taking good care of that piece of land only makes sense.  There are many ways to improve your soil and to help sustain it for generations to come.

We take a hands-on approach to soil health.  We like to know the farms we work with to help improve them.  We feel the best way to begin is with current soil samples and we prefer the Haney Soil Test.  The Haney Test is a great tool to see how you are moving the needle on your soil health as you incorporate management techniques such as cover crops, reduced tillage, less harsh fertilizer options, lower pesticide use, and biologicals.  Different soil types respond differently to some of these approaches so we make sure to be intentional as we put a plan together for your farm.

In addition to the Haney Test, we like to measure soil health during the growing season.  One of our favorite tools is the microBIOMETER.  With this tool we are able to measure microbial biomass and the fungal to bacterial ratio of your soil.  This gives us a real time measurement of how we are improving the biology in your soil while incorporating practices such as adding live biologicals to your cropping system.

Soil health isn't a destination.  It is an ongoing journey that pays large dividends when you plot the course properly.  We are excited to have the opportunity to assist you as you take your farm's soil health to greater levels!
